flavor of eastern Europe. The picturesque Danube river bisects Budapest
which until 1867 was actually two separate cities, Buda and Pest.

There is a quaint but efficient system of electric trains
travelling back and forth along the left bank of the Danube
every 15 minutes or so. They are one of the four urban
railways available. A combination of trains, taxis and brief
walks puts you in easy reach of almost all the major points of interest.
Driving on the narrow, busy streets is not
for the impatient or timid and parking can be difficult to find
but for casual tourists staying in the inner city a rental car is completely
unnecessary. Passes for the urban railways may be had for a day
or a week but many tourists ride for free as there is seldom
anyone on duty to check passes. However, on occasion you may be
asked to show a valid pass upon leaving a train stop, especially
where the end of the line is a popular destination for tourists.
In such cases the passes are inexpensive and may be purchased on the spot
when required.
